How is a proprietorship registered?
There is no single government registration for a sole proprietorship. Instead, the business is recognised through the tax and business licences it holds in the owner's name — most commonly GST registration, Udyam (MSME) registration and the Shops & Establishment licence. Together these prove the business exists and let you open a current account in the business name.
Registrations a proprietorship typically needs
- PAN and AadhaarThe proprietor's own PAN is used for the business — there is no separate PAN.
- Udyam (MSME) registrationFree government recognition that unlocks MSME benefits, priority lending and delayed-payment protection.
- GST registrationCompulsory once turnover crosses the threshold, or if you sell inter-state / online. Also useful voluntarily for input tax credit.
- Shops & Establishment licenceUnder the Karnataka Shops and Commercial Establishments Act, for businesses operating from a shop or office.
- Current bank accountA separate account in the business name keeps finances clean and is required by most clients.
- Trade licence (BBMP)Needed for certain trades in Bengaluru — we will tell you if yours does.

Which businesses suit a proprietorship?
A proprietorship can carry on most trades and services open to an Indian citizen. However, regulated activities such as banking, insurance, lending and telecom need special approvals usually available only to companies. As your business grows, you can convert the proprietorship into a private limited company.
